Weight Loss Injection Therapy?
Semaglutide ™ and Liraglutide ™ are two injectable medications that are FDA approved under the brand names Wegovy and Saxenda for the treatment of obesity. These synthetic hormones act on the brain inducing a feeling of satiety (or “fullness”) which decrease portion size and snacking frequency. This combination lowers your caloric intake resulting in a proven reduction in weight over time.
Who Qualifies For Injection Therapy?
These prescription medications are approved for use as an obesity treatment in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or a BMI of 27 and one or more weight-related medical conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes or heart disease.
While this medication has been proven to be safe and effective in the treatment for obesity, not everyone with the above criteria qualifies as there are contraindications to these medications. Any patient with a personal of family history of medullary thyroid cancer or multiple endocrine neoplasia type II should be excluded from being placed on this medication.
How effective is treatment with weight loss injection therapy?
The New England Journal of Medicine published results from the STEP 1 which was a research study investigating how well semaglutide ™ works in people suffering from overweight or obesity. The study concluded in showing an average 14.9% reduction in body weight over 68 weeks of treatment. That compares to 2.9% for placebo, 5-9% for other medications, or 5% for lifestyle changes and behavior therapy.
