A push present is a gift given to a mother by her partner, family, or friends to celebrate and acknowledge the effort and pain she went through during childbirth. The term “push present” comes from the idea of “pushing” during labor, though the gift can be given regardless of the delivery method, including cesarean sections.

These presents can vary widely in type and value, ranging from jewelry, such as rings or necklaces, to more personalized items like custom-made keepsakes or experiences like spa days. The purpose of a push present is to show appreciation and gratitude for the new mother’s hard work and sacrifice, marking the significant milestone of bringing a new life into the world.

I didn’t want any of these things, I keep my jewelry simple and often times don’t have the time to go to a spa. Instead I asked for a gym membership.

I was finding myself stressed about getting my 1 year old and newborn down for a nap while trying to entertain my 3 year-old during the 20 minute workout that I’d quickly throw on the TV. While I was prioritizing staying active it was becoming too hard to accomplish and I know I need this to allow myself to be the best mom, doctor, friend, wife, daughter, sister… to wear all the hats I wear for the other 23 hours of the day.

Staying active as a new mom is vital for several reasons, encompassing physical health, mental well-being, and setting a positive example for the family and patients. The transition into motherhood can be both joyful and challenging, and maintaining an active lifestyle can significantly ease this transition.

Physically, staying active helps new moms recover from childbirth more quickly and regain their strength. Pregnancy and delivery place considerable stress on the body, and exercise aids in rebuilding muscle tone, improving cardiovascular health, and boosting overall energy levels. Regular physical activity also helps manage postpartum weight, reducing the risk of obesity and related health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, exercise promotes better sleep, which is crucial for new moms who often face sleep disruptions.

Mentally, staying active offers substantial benefits. Postpartum depression and anxiety are common issues among new mothers, and exercise has been shown to alleviate symptoms of these conditions. Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood lifters. It also provides a much-needed break from the daily routine, offering time for self-care and stress relief. Engaging in group activities, such as postpartum yoga or stroller fitness classes, can also help new moms build a supportive community and reduce feelings of isolation.

Children learn habits from their parents, and by prioritizing physical health, new moms can instill the importance of an active lifestyle in their children from a young age. This early introduction to exercise can lead to lifelong healthy habits for the entire family.

Incorporating physical activity into daily routines can be as simple as taking regular walks with the baby, practhicing yoga at home, or engaging in postpartum fitness classes. It is essential for new moms to consult with their healthcare provider before starting any exercise regimen to ensure it is safe and appropriate for their specific circumstances.

Staying active as a new mom is crucial for physical recovery, mental health, and fostering a healthy family environment. By prioritizing physical activity, new mothers can navigate the challenges of early motherhood with greater ease and set a foundation for a healthy and active family life.
